What do you mean you can't use it as a verb? "The huge asteroid impacted the moon, shattering it to bits." or even "I have often dreamed of my fist impacting Bill O'Reilly's face."
But, yeah, it can be grating none the less. Definitely best used as a noun, especially when not referring to physical violence. :)
